Now Supplied with New Wording!
We initially designed this kit as a Scottish Millennium Sampler. However, now that the Millennium has passed, we've included some alternative phrases to replace the "2000" in the Centre Panel. These phrases include "History of a Nation", "Nemo Me Impune Lacessit" (Scotland's national motto), "Wha Daurs Meddle wi Me" (a rough translation into Scots of the said motto), and "My Country". Charts for all of these, as well as the original "2000", are now included in every kit so that the stitcher can choose which one he or she wishes to include.
The design is a celebration in counted threadwork of the last thousand years of Scottish history. Framed by the Thistles, Saltire and Lion Rampant of Scotland the sampler is divided into 10 sections, each of which represents a century and which take us from the Celtic Church of the 11th century to Scotland's new Parliament of 1999. The kit is supplied as standard with Zweigart 27 count Linda evenweave 100% cotton in antique white, and when finished it has a stitch count of 163 x 259 and measures 12.1 x 19.2 inches (307 x 487 mm). We don't really consider this kit to be suitable for stitching on Aida but we know that some people insist on Aida and only Aida, and so on special request we will supply 14 count antique white Aida (but be warned, it will be a lot more difficult to stitch!) For stitchers who aren't used to evenweave, we've included a small piece of the material to practise on using the supplied gold-plated needle. The threads are Stranded Cotton by Anchor and Madeira, Decora stranded rayon by Madeira, and Metallic Gold by Madeira. Some are supplied as complete skeins, others are ready sorted on an organiser and all are easily identified by the colour chart, which also indicates the numbers of strands to use. The stitches used are cross stitch, back stitch, long stitch, Holbein/double running stitch, couching and French knots. Detailed instructions are given for all these stitches. There are 4 easy to see overlapping charts of the complete design, plus individual enlarged charts for each of the buildings etc. Each of the enlarged charts is accompanied by a historical note on the building or event which it represents. As stated above, charts are supplied so you have a choice of wording for the Centre Panel and there is also a chart of alphabet and numbers for you to 'sign' your work on completion.
